Championship: Hull City 0 Brighton 0

Hull City played out a goalless draw with Brighton and Hove Albion in the Championship on Wednesday.
Nick Barmby's side could have climbed inside the top six with a victory but were instead forced to settle for a point against a Brighton side coming off a 6-1 FA Cup hiding at the hands of Liverpool in their last fixture.
Hull dominated the match and had a host of chances in the second half to score the all-important goal.
But they were kept at bay by Brighton goalkeeper Peter Brezovan though, as Hull remained in eighth on the table.
Brighton's point saw them move above Leeds United and into ninth.

Scottish Premier League wrap: Celtic extend lead

Celtic extended their lead to 20 points at the top of the Scottish Premier League after a 2-0 win over Dunfermline on Wednesday.
Neil Lennon's side look destined to win their first SPL title since 2007/08 after rivals Rangers were recently deducted 10 points for entering administration.
And they moved even closer to achieving the feat with the comfortable home victory against the bottom-placed Dunfermline.
Defender Charlie Mulgrew gave Celtic the lead on 32 minutes before substitute James Forrest sealed the result with his strike 15 minutes from time.
In the other SPL match on Wednesday, Motherwell came from behind to defeat struggling Hibernian 4-3.
Isaiah Osbourne gave Hibs an 18th minute lead and Pat Fenlon's side carried that into half time.
Michael Higdon responded from the penalty spot just after the break though and Jamie Murphy put Motherwell in front on 63 minutes.
Matt Doherty netted an equaliser just three minutes later but goals from Higdon on 70 and 75 minutes – the latter from another penalty – gave third-placed Motherwell a handy lead.
Ivan Sproule's strike with five minutes left for Hibs ensured a nervy finish but Stuart McCall's men hung on for an important victory in their quest for second spot.
Motherwell now trail Rangers by just six points and are nine points clear of Hearts and St Johnstone, who sit fourth and fifth respectively.

Champions League: Marseille 1 Inter Milan 0

Andre Ayew's late goal saw Marseille defeat Inter Milan 1-0 in the first leg of their round-of-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday.
The Ghanaian's glancing header in stoppage time was enough to give the Ligue 1 outfit the advantage heading into the second leg, which will be held in Milan on March 13.
Marseille started well and enjoyed plenty of early possession, with Benoit Cheyrou going close in the early stages.
Cheyrou's strike from distance was deflected just wide while Cesar Azpilicueta fired over from long range.
Inter had chances of their own with Diego Forlan and Mauro Zarate forcing smart saves from Marseille shot-stopper Steve Mandanda.
A threatening free-kick from Mathieu Valbuena could have easily been turned in, only for Brandao and Souleymane Diawara to get in each other's way, while Esteban Cambiasso – who was Inter's most threatening player – had a goal-bound strike blocked by Diawara.
Inter sat back more in the second half as they tried to soak up Marseille's pressure and head back to the San Siro on level terms.
Didier Deschamps' side once again had lots of the ball but they were frustrated by their lack of cutting edge in attack.
The match seemed headed for a goalless stalemate but Ayew looked threatening late on and forced a series of saves from Inter's Julio Cesar.
One of those stops led to a corner from which the all-important goal was finally scored.
Valbuena's handy ball into the box was met by Ayew and he wheeled off in celebration as his header snuck past Cesar.
The Stade Velodrome crowd exploded in delight with the late goal and Inter were left to regret their defensive tactics.
The defeat will put even more pressure on the club's manager, Claudio Ranieri, with the Serie A giants now winless in their last seven matches.

Champions League: Basel 1 Bayern Munich 0

Basel pulled off a shock 1-0 home win over Bayern Munich in their Champions League round-of-16 first-leg tie at St Jakob-Park on Wednesday.
Substitute Valentin Stocker scored the only goal of the game with five minutes remaining, but the real hero was Yann Sommer, whose heroics in goal halted the visitors time and time again, preserving a slender advantage for the second leg in Munich on March 13.
The game started at breakneck pace, and the visitors almost made the perfect start four minutes in. Arjen Robben's pass picked out Franck Ribery inside the area, but his effort from close range was thwarted superbly by Sommer.
Ribery was at it again a few minutes later when he was played through on goal by Philipp Lahm, forcing Sommer to palm away his low effort at his near post.
The Swiss club took little time in recovering from the early pressure though, and were increasingly able to get forward and find space in and around a suspect Bayern back four.
With 15 minutes gone, Manuel Neuer was called into action to block Marco Streller's flick at the near post.
The Germany number one made an even better save a minute later, showing fantastic reflexes to push Aleksandar Dragovic's point-blank header onto the post.
Chances were coming thick and fast, and the home side were cursing their luck again moments later after Joo-Ho Park teed up Alexander Frei inside the area for a first-time shot that smacked off the crossbar.
The tempo of the game died down somewhat as the first half wore on, but Sommer was called into action again on the half-hour mark to get strong hands on David Alaba's effort from range. Somehow, the match entered half-time with the score still goalless.
Basel created the first opportunity after the interval with Streller easily out-jumping Lahm in the area, but his header was lacking and was saved by Neuer.
In stark contrast to the opening exchanges, the second period unfolded in a relatively uneventful fashion, as both teams lacked the spark in attack that was so evident in the first half.
Lahm tried to kick things into life in the 66th minute when he let fly from 25 yards out, but Sommer got across well to tip the shot wide.
The Basel 'keeper was equal to everything Bayern could throw at him, and came up with the goods again with 20 minutes remaining, rushing off his line to block from Mario Gomez.
Sommer's heroics were rewarded with five minutes remaining, as substitute Jacques Zoua strode across the edge of the Bayern box and played in Stocker, who had enough time and space to slot past Neuer and send the Swiss fans into dreamland.
Bayern were unable to muster a response in the time that remained, leaving Basel with a one-goal lead to protect in the second leg at Allianz Arena in three weeks' time.

Spurs derby is Arsenal´s call to arms, says Sagna

rsenal defender Bacary Sagna has called for his team to 'fight to the end' ahead of their Premier League derby with Tottenham.
The north Londoners suffered another setback on Saturday after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Sunderland, a result which followed their dismal performance in the Champions League again AC Milan - a 4-0 away loss.
The full-back Sagna, however, is still carrying belief and insisted the squad have the quality to produce the goods in Sunday's vital clash with Spurs, as Arsene Wenger's team look to finish in the top four.
"We have to keep our heads up, work hard and think about the Premier League because we have a derby next weekend against Tottenham," Sagna told Arsenal Player.
"We need to do it for us and for the fans as well. We have to react. We can't play like this against Tottenham otherwise we will lose."
"We have one week to get ready for the game, to question ourselves, to work and to talk to each other."
"We are professional and we have to fight until the end."
"We have to look forwards. We are fourth in the Premier League and we can't let it go like this."

Giggs hails United experience

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs said his side's experience will count in the chase for this season's Premier League title.
Manchester City are currently two points clear of their rivals at the table summit, but the 38-year-old Giggs - who has partaken in each of Sir Alex Ferguson's 12 title successes to date - believes his team-mates have the hunger, desire and experience to overhaul their 'noisy neighbours'.
"I think in most people's eyes they're favourites because they're top of the league, and because of the quality they've got, and the football they played early season," the veteran told United's official website.
"You can't ignore the money and the quality they've got, and their strength in depth."
"They're obviously trying to lay the foundations for 10, 20, 30 years. Whether it happens or not we'll have to wait and see."
"It's just down to which team handles it (pressure) best."
While the Welshman is well aware that the City squad is packed full of quality internationals, including the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure, he believes that United's 'seen it and done it' experience will help United during the coming months.
"They've got a lot of experience, they've got players who've won things, but we like to think we've got a good mix of experience and hunger," Giggs said.
"I think the experience of doing it before with the manager (is key)."
"We've got older players who've been there, and younger players who haven't and really want to win things, so hopefully that's in our favour."

Pique wants Pep to re-sign

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said he wants Pep Guardiola to sign a new contract with the Spanish champions.
The 41-year-old coach has been coy about his long-term future at Camp Nou, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.
Having guided Barca to 13 trophies since taking over the club's first team in 2008, there are suggestions that Guardiola is in need of a new challenge, but Pique said he believes the coach has not lost his motivation for the job.
"He must continue at Barca for all he has experienced and for all there is still to experience," Pique told reporters.
The Spain international then denied suggestions of a bust-up between himself and Guardiola, after being omitted from Barca's squad for their 3-1 Champions League victory against Bayer Leverkusen last week.
"Guardiola is key in the dressing room," Pique said.
"He gave me the opportunity to experience this and I will always be grateful to him."
"I will never argue any decision he makes."

Mbuyane expects defensive Recreativo

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thulasizwe Mbuyane is expecting a tough test from Angolan side Recreativo do Libolo on Sunday.
The South African side host Recreativo in the first leg of a CAF Champions League tie looking to improve on their performance against Black Leopards on Wednesday.
In their first match in just under two months, the Pirates limped to a 1-0 league win against the bottom-placed Leopards, with Mbuyane scoring the game's only goal.
"First games back after a long break are always difficult, but I'm happy that we got the three points," Mbuyane told KickOff.com.
"Our next focus now is on the CAF Champions League game on Sunday. This is a must-win game for us to make sure that we go into the second leg enjoying a healthy lead."
"It's difficult to play this kind of game at home because these teams will only come here for a draw, but I am confident that we will get a great victory in Port Elizabeth on Sunday."

Prandelli confident of Italian chances

Italy coach Cesare Pandelli believes AC Milan, Inter and Napoli can all progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Milan already have one foot in the last eight after a dominant 4-0 first-leg win over Arsenal at San Siro, while Claudio Ranieri's men are set to take on Marseille and Walter Mazzarri's side face Chelsea.
Prandelli has talked up the Serie A representatives' chances and feels there could be three Italian teams in the next round.
"I am confident in all three Italian teams making the next round of the Champions League," Prandelli told Tuttosport.
"Milan have virtually guaranteed their place in the quarter-finals after their game against Arsenal."
"Inter are having a season of ups and downs and lately have gone through a difficult time but the players are able to revive the Nerazzurri."
"In a one-off match Napoli can beat anyone; today all clubs are reluctant to play Walter Mazzarri's team in a decisive game."
When quizzed about Euro 2012 and the inclusion of controversial striker Mario Balotelli, Prandelli was quick to defend the Manchester City attacker.
"Let him mature, he is only 21. Unfortunately, in Italy there is no time for young people to mature," he said.
"If you score a goal, you are a champion and they put you on the front page. Then the week after scoring a goal if you say something wrong then you're immature."
"In Italy it is difficult to handle the psychological pressure."

No Ba in Senegal squad

Newcastle striker Demba Ba was among the high-profile players left out of Senegal's squad for their upcoming friendly against South Africa.
Ba joined Fenerbahce forward Moussa Sow and Marseille's attacker Mamadou Niang on the sidelines as Senegal took a youthful approach for the February 29 clash in Durban.
After Senegal's horrific 2012 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, in which they crashed out of the group stage after losing all three matches, interim coaches Karim Sega Diouf and Aliou Cisse named a much-changed squad.
The Senegalese Football Federation said that the likes of Ba had not been axed from the team, but that they wanted to take the opportunity to promote 12 players from the country's Under-23 squad.
Only nine players who travelled to the Africa Cup of Nations under then-manager Amara Troare have been retained.
Senegal Squad:
Goalkeepers: Bouna Coundoul, Khadim Ndiaye
Defenders: Abdoulaye Ba, Jacques Faty, Papa Gueye, Kader Mangane, Cheikh Mbengue Pape, Ndiaye Souare, Matar Thioune, Zarco Toure
Midfielders: Stephane Badji, Mouhamed Diame, Ricardo Faty, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Cheikh Kouyate, Ndiaye Deme Ndiaye
Forwards: Ibrahima Balde, Papiss Demba Cisse, Boubacar Dialiba Diabang, Mame Biram Diouf, Moussa Konate, Dame Ndoye

Torres: ´I cannot score´

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has confessed that he 'cannot score' and knows he needs to improve.
The 27-year-old – who joined Chelsea from Liverpool for a reported fee of 50 million pounds in January 2011 – has scored just three English Premier League goals in 34 appearances for the club.
The Spaniard is well-aware that he needs to start scoring more regularly, although he revealed that he is feeling terrific physically.
"Personally I have to improve", Torres told ESPN.
"In my time at Liverpool there were games where I would not be playing well or I would be doing nothing but every time I touched the ball I scored."
"It's such a strange feeling now because I am feeling better than ever physically. I am not finding the chances and, when I do find the chances, I cannot score."
"To be honest, after one year I was expecting things would be better than they are now."
Torres admitted that life at Chelsea was 'difficult' due to poor results but added that he was happy in his personal life and has no plans to leave West London.
"On the pitch it is a difficult time for Chelsea because we are not finding the results but we're changing things like playing a different style and still we have a young team to do it," he said.
"It is a difficult situation because I am happy in my personal life. We really like the club and we're very happy here to be involved with the staff and the players. "
"My present and my future are here. I have many things to do here and I want to do it because I always did what I wanted in every club I've been at, so this is not going to be different."

Serie A wrap: Bologna compound Inter woe

Marco Di Vaio struck twice as Bologna heaped more pressure on Inter coach Claudio Ranieri with a stunning 3-0 victory at San Siro on Friday.
Inter, who went into the game without a win in their four previous Serie A outings, had the better of the early exchanges but were left reeling after a quick-fire double from Di Vaio shortly before the break.
Inter tried to rally in the second period but Robert Acquafresca sealed victory for the visitors when he fired home with just five minutes of normal time remaining.
Inter dominated the early exchanges but were made to pay for profligacy by a Bologna counterpunch, with Diego Perez setting up Di Vaio for the opening goal after 37 minutes.
The former Italy international extended the lead moments later after pouncing on a defensive error to slot in his second and give his side a 2-0 half-time lead.
Inter continued to battle but were left open to the counterattack in the second half and Bologna put the game beyond doubt when Acquafresca fired home from the edge of area.
Inter, who have taken one point from the last 15 available, drop to sixth in the standings, while Bologna climb one place to 16th.
An Edison Cavani brace and Ezequiel Lavezzi strike gave Napoli a 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Friday's other match.
Uruguay international Cavani opened the scoring after just three minutes at Stadio Artemio Franchi before doubling up 10 minutes after the break.
Argentine Lavezzi struck in injury time to seal a second consecutive win for Walter Mazzarri's side, which takes them into fifth place.
Bordeaux midfielder Ludovic Obraniak hopes that his side can maintain their unbeaten status in 2012 when they host Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Francis Gillot's men are without defeat in their last four league games, including a stunning 5-4 win last time out at champions Lille.
Poland international Obraniak, who moved to Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas from Lille in the January transfer window, says Gillot has set a target of a top-five finish at the end of the season.
"We should not get carried away after a good recent spell. Lyon will be a good test for us." Obraniak said.
"It will allow us to see what is possible for the rest of the season. We want to take revenge after our defeat against them in the (French) Cup as well - we were frustrated during that game to not play really as we wanted."
"It will be a good opportunity to come back strongly and to get closer to the top of the league. We should definitely be more ambitious for the rest of the season."
"This game will be different. We will want to play the same way as we have been playing lately. We are looking at each game as it comes."

Eredivisie: Heerenveen 1 NAC Breda 0

A solitary Filip Djuricic goal was enough to hand Heerenveen a fifth consecutive Eredivisie win at the expense of NAC Breda.
Serb midfielder Djuricic struck in the 34th minute to secure the 1-0 victory for hosts Heerenveen, who saw off some late pressure from NAC to hold out for three points at Abe Lenstra Stadion.
The win moves Ron Jans' third-placed side on to 43 points, two shy of joint leaders PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar who both have a game in hand.
A third straight defeat leaves NAC six points clear of the drop zone, though that gap can be halved if VVV Venlo win at De Graafschap on Saturday.

Montella: No referee agenda against Juve

Catania manager Vincezo Montella is adamant that referees do not favour teams playing against Juventus.
Juventus manager Antonio Conte claimed officials are too scared to give his side penalties after his side were denied two spot kicks against Parma in midweek.
But speaking ahead of his side's clash with the Turin giants, Montella does not believe Juve are being targeted.
"I think we can easily say that in general referees have been doing a great job this season," Montella told reporters.
"Obviously I don't think there's a plot against Juventus, otherwise they would have given the first penalty against Giovinco in their last match."
"That's my opinion, then, of course referees are making some mistakes, as they did in the past and will do in the future."
Montella is confident Catania have the mettle to match Juventus away on Saturday, but concedes they can only hand them a first league defeat of the season if Conte's side are below their best.
"The facts say Juventus are having an extraordinary season, beyond all expectation, and the manager and the club should be credited for this," Montella said.
"They're on the top of the table and they deserve that position, they will be looking to continue that season against Catania."
"We will be there to play, trying to do our best and trying to win the match. It can happen only if we play an extraordinary match and hope Juventus will play below their normal standard."

Emery alert to Stoke threat

Valencia manager Unai Emery is aware of the dangers of his side's 1-0 win over Stoke City ahead of next week's Europa League second leg.
Turkish midfielder Mehmet Topal scored the only goal of the game with a stunning effort from 30 yards to claim the win for the Spanish club at Britannia Stadium on Thursday.
However, Emery rates a single goal lead as shaky at best.
"It's a complicated and dangerous result 1-0, anything can happen and we still fully respect the tie and we respect Stoke City as a football club, if they score at our place it changes the tie and turns it on its head," Emery said after the victory in England.
The 40-year-old was happy with the attacking pressure his side put on Stoke, identifying movement off the ball and the energy of Brazilian attacker Jonas as crucial factors.
"I think that in the attacking phases of the game I think we did very well because we knew we had to try and cause problems for Stoke in order to alleviate any pressure that they were putting on us," Emery said.
Emery's counterpart, Tony Pulis, expressed his disappointment that Valencia midfielder Tino Costa remained on the pitch despite a number of rough challenges on Dean Whitehead, which the Stoke substitute believed could have broken his leg.
"They're very bad challenges," the Stoke manager said.
"We've been caught a few times in our last couple of games where challenges have been bad and gone over the top of the ball."
"Again the ref has got a great view, the fourth official and linesman were there as well."
"It's very disappointing – they're talking about cleaning things up. It's knowing the difference between a good tackle and a bad tackle and sometimes were not getting that."
But Emery denied his players went too far.
"I think we played the conditions the game was forcing us to play but I wouldn't say we were hard or excessively aggressive," the Valencia manager said.
Pulis was also believed his players should have prevented Topal's goal.

"We never got to the ball quick enough," Pulis said.
"It was a goal once he had hit it."
"You could see it was going into the top corner as soon as it came off his foot but we should have done better there."

Mancini impressed by City show

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was impressed by his side's 2-1 victory over Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.
City went behind in the first half after a Silvestre Varela strike, but an own goal from Alvaro Pereira and a Sergio Aguero winner late on handed the visitors the advantage ahead of next week's second leg in Manchester.
"I think that we played a good game," Mancini told ITV Sport. "We played very well. Also in the first half we had three or four chances to score."
"We were really unlucky, but in the second half we played very well."
"Second half maybe we stayed higher and played better, but we had seven or eight chances to score in this game."
"We didn't leave any chances to Porto. I think this is important because Porto is a top team."
It had been claimed City striker Mario Balotelli was subjected to racist taunts from the Porto crown, but Mancini insisted that he did not hear the alleged abuse.
"I didn't hear any, sorry. I didn't hear," the Italian manager said.

Redknapp open to short-term role

Harry Redknapp says it would be unfair to leave Tottenham to become England manager, but he is open to taking over in a caretaker role.
The 64-year-old Tottenham manager is firm favourite to take the reins as England manager after the shock resignation of Fabio Capello last week.
While Redknapp has played down talk of him taking the job on a permanent basis, he has suggested that a role as temporary manager at Euro 2012 is a possibility.
"Part-time? In the short term I think it's possible for the European Championships," Redknapp told Abu Dhabi Sports. "But I think in the long-term it's not possible to manage a club team and manage a national team."
"It's difficult enough to manage in the Premier League without having to worry about managing the England team as well."
"You want to be watching England players play, you want to be watching the opposition."
"Maybe for the Euros, it's not such a problem but once the Euros are finished and the new season starts in England, the manager has to be a Premier League manager. To do the two jobs, it would be impossible."
Redknapp was quick to reiterate that he is enjoying his time at White Hart Lane and that his immediate concern is to build Tottenham's recent successes in the Premier League, where they currently sit comfortably in third place.
"I have a good job and I work with good people and I have a good team. The fans have been fantastic to me." Redknapp added.
"Just to walk away now, when we're in such a good position, it wouldn't be fair, it wouldn't be fair on Tottenham. I have to really keep focusing on Tottenham."

Petersen frustrated at Bayern

Bayern Munich forward Nils Petersen has revealed he is disappointed with his lack of first-team opportunities.
The 23-year-old joined Bayern from Energie Cottbus in the off-season and has scored four goals from his 12 appearances in all competitions.
The re-emergence of Croatian striker Ivica Olic has seen Petersen fall out of favour though, and although he pledged to continue working hard, his unhappiness was obvious.
"At the beginning of the season I played a few times in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and even in the Champions League," Petersen exclusively told Goal.com.
"Of course I'm disappointed (with my situation). I'm no longer striker number two and that means little or no playing time."
"I must continue to work on my game and then hopefully I'll get opportunities. I must be patient."
Petersen was the top scorer in the German second-tier last season, netting 25 goals in 33 appearances for his former club.

Ranieri feeling the heat at Inter

nter Milan coach Claudio Ranieri knows his side need to end their winless streak in Friday's match away to Bologna. After a superb run of form saw them win eight matches in a row during December and January, Inter have since slipped up, and are without a victory from their last four Serie A outings.
"Our recent performances haven't been good, we suffered a couple of bad defeats, so now we need to bounce back as soon as possible," Ranieri said.
"Tomorrow we're playing against Bologna and they haven't been beaten away since the end of the winter break."
"We need to get some points and play as well as we know we can, even with the injuries that we have. We'll try and be focused, try not to concede too much and try to create chances to score."
Ranieri is aware the pressure is on, and recognises the possibility he could be sacked if Inter's poor run continues.
"Everyone here is always being tested - me included, I have a contract but I know that if things go wrong I'll be sacked, so if I want to remain here I need to give all that I have and the same is true for my players," he said.
"The players and the manager are all being tested, we're all always being tested. There's a new project, the president wants to win and do something great again, then of course there are also average seasons, and there are those who understand that and those who don't."

Zenga slams ´nobody´ journalist

Al Nasr coach Walter Zenga has launched a stunning tirade on local UAE press after Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Al Wahda in the Pro-League.
The result was a blow to the in-form Al Nasr's title hopes and the former Italy goalkeeper was not in a jovial mood at the post-match press conference.
When asked by one journalist whether his 'defensive' tactics were to blame for the defeat, he angrily responded: "I will not answer this stupid question. I enjoy my time in football. You are nothing. You are nobody."
The former Inter player and Catania and Palermo coach then slammed the local press for lacking respect.
"I only wish to have respect for me, my club and my fans. Only this," he said.
"One year ago we were eighth in the table, now Nasr are in the first two positions for the first time since 1999. People must remember this."
Zenga's opposite number, Al Wahda coach Josef Hickersberger, backed the Italian for the job he had done so far at Al Nasr.
"For me Walter Zenga has done a great job for Al Nasr because the players they have brought in, (Mark) Bresciano, (Amara) Diane, and (Luca) Toni, they have great quality," he said.
"You saw in the second half that Al Nasr made it very difficult for us as they are very good team. I think they are able to win the league this season."

Champions League: AC Milan 4 Arsenal 0

Arsenal face elimination from the Champions League after being mauled 4-0 by AC Milan in their round-of-16 first-leg match at San Siro on Wendesday.
Kevin-Prince Boateng opened the scoring after 15 minutes, while a brace from Robinho either side of half-time put the result beyond doubt before a late penalty from Zlatan Ibrahimovic left Arsenal with a mountain to climb in the second leg at the Emirates on March 6.
The attacking trio of Boateng, Ibrahimovic and Robinho immediately looked threatening.
After Clarence Seedorf was forced off due to injury early on, Ibrahimovic beautifully controlled a pass into the path of his replacement, Urby Emanuelson, but the Netherlands midfielder skewed his shot from inside the box over the crossbar.
It did not take long for Boateng to do significantly better. Picked out by Alberto Nocerino's chipped pass, the Ghana midfielder engineered a brilliant volley from the right-hand side of the penalty area that hit the crossbar on its way in.
Arsenal soaked up pressure for much of the first half, but there was little the visiting defence could do seven minutes before half-time, when Ibrahimovic broke away from what looked like an offside position down the left-hand side.
The 30-year-old nudged the ball past Bacary Sagna and delivered for the arriving Robinho, who headed beyond Wojciech Szczesny.
Only a desperate challenge from Sagna prevented Ibrahimovic from converting with a diving header from close range, as Milan ended the half very much in the ascendancy.
Thierry Henry, playing his last game for Arsenal before the end of his loan spell, was introduced in place of Theo Walcott at the break.
If Wenger was hoping for any kind of fairytale farewell, he was brought back to reality four minutes after the restart when Robinho, taking advantage of Thomas Vermaelen's slip, latched on to Ibrahimovic's pass across the edge of the box and fired past Szczesny from 20 yards.
Milan began to enjoy themselves with the security of a three-goal cushion, Philippe Mexes feeling confident enough to dribble ambitiously out of defence on more than one occasion, until Robin van Persie fired them a warning shot after 65 minutes.
The Netherlands forward met Henry's flick with a sweetly-struck volley that Christian Abbiati did very well to turn around the post.
Massimiliano Allegri was quick to react, introducing an experienced head in the form of Massimo Ambrosini to shore up the Milan midfield as Arsenal began to enjoy more of the ball.
Ibrahimovic has taken plenty of criticism during his career for his perceived underachievement in these types of matches, but he was magnificent here and created himself a deserved goal as the game drew to a close.
Drawing a clumsy challenge from Johan Djourou in the penalty area after some typically elegant close control, the Swede coolly converted from the spot to rub salt into the Arsenal wounds.

Champions League: Zenit St Petersburg 3 Benfica 2

Zenit St Petersburg ran out 3-2 winners over Benfica in a thrilling Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash at the Petrovsky Stadium.
Maxi Pereira opened the scoring for the visitors 20 minutes in on Wednesday, but Roman Shirokov hit back for the hosts seven minutes later to have things level at half-time.
Sergei Semak gave Zenit the lead at the 71-minute mark, but a goal from Oscar Cardozo three minutes from the end seemed to be enough to secure a draw for Benfica.
Shirokov, however, had other ideas and rounded off his brace one minute later to hand the Russian club the advantage before the return leg in Portugal on March 6.
Conditions were well below freezing, and with the home side playing their first competitive match in two months, it was no surprise that the first half unfolded in fits and starts with both teams struggling to establish a rhythm.
Perhaps befitting the tone of the opening exchanges, it was a scrappy goal from Benfica that broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. A free kick by Cardozo was fumbled by goalkeeper Yuri Zhevnov, which gave Pereira an empty net in which to poke home the rebound.
Zenit were not fazed by the setback, and went on the offensive moments later through Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who forced Benfica goalkeeper Artur to block his effort.
Artur could do nothing about the equaliser in the 28th minute, however, after an inviting cross by Tomas Hubocan was volleyed superbly by Shirokov into the bottom corner.
Neither side was able to maintain the momentum for long, and the match settled into a lull as the first half drew to a close. Things did not get much better after the interval, with both sides content to err on the side of caution as the second half progressed.
Cardozo was able to spark things into life in the 69th minute when he managed to squeeze a shot towards goal, forcing Zhevnov into an awkward scrambling save.
Two minutes later Zenit took the lead for the first time after another well-worked goal. Kerzhakov raced down the right to hook the ball towards Vladimir Bystrov, and his low cross found fellow substitute Semak, who turned the ball home with a clever flick.
Kerzhakov was at it again a few minutes later when he was found in space inside the area, but the forward elected to blast the ball into the side netting instead of cutting back for one of his better-placed team-mates.
With three minutes to go, Benfica grabbed an equaliser through Cardozo after a fumble by Zhevnov allowed the Paraguayan the simplest of finishes from barely a yard out.
But the drama was not done there, and Zenit regained the lead a minute later after a failed clearance by Pereira and a spill by Artur allowed Shirokov an open goal to give the Russian outfit a slender advantage heading into the second leg in Lisbon.

Henry reluctant to leave Arsenal

Bacary Sagna and Robin van Persie believe Thierry Henry would like to extend his Arsenal stay, as he prepares to rejoin New York Red Bulls.
Arsenal favourite Henry has enjoyed a prosperous period during his loan spell back in England from Major League Soccer, scoring three times in six appearances.
He will travel with Arsenal to take on AC Milan in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg at San Siro on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen if the match will indeed be his last for the north London club.
"He would like to stay, but he wants to be loyal to New York," fullback Sagna told L'Equipe.
Club captain Van Persie said the loan move had afforded Henry the opportunity to enjoy himself in football like never before.
"During his whole career he has had to be focused, score, and repeat it over and over again, without having time to stop and enjoy the moment, because he worked like a machine," he said.
"But he told me, for the very first time, he really had fun."
Henry reiterated he would be unable to extend the loan deal owing to his Red Bulls commitments, but he could not rule out another return in the future.
"You never know how things would end," he said.
"It is certainly the end. But who knows? Perhaps it can be different."

Mascherano: Leverkusen tie not over yet

Barcelona's Javier Mascherano is wary of the threat posed by Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the Champions League last-16 second leg at Camp Nou.
Holders Barca recorded a 3-1 victory in the team's first meeting at the BayArena on Tuesday, thanks to two Alexis Sanchez goals and one from Lionel Messi.
In light of Barca's impressive home form this season, and their two-goal advantage, the tie appears to be over already, but Mascherano does not see it that way.
"It's a very good result but we have to play the return match against a rival German team that never gives up," he said.
Argentina international Mascherano declined to speculate on who Barca's quarter-final opponents may be if they do progress.
"No, the most dangerous rival is Bayer Leverkusen, the team that we have to face again," he said.
"If we progress to the quarters, then we'll see what team we play. But the most dangerous opponent for us now is still Bayer Leverkusen."
Mascherano was deployed as a centre-back at the BayArena and the former Liverpool midfielder insists he has no issue playing out of his natural position.

Arteta ready for Milan test

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta says his side face a tough task in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie away to AC Milan.
English Premier League club Arsenal lost just one match on their way to topping Group F, ahead of Marseille and Borussia Dortmund.
But Arteta feels with three representatives in the last 16, the Italian clubs have a legitimate claim to be title challengers.
"Italian sides are very tough and very experienced," Arteta told the club's official website.
"If you give them half chances, they take them. We know we cannot make any mistakes over the two legs so we really have to concentrate."
"Italian teams have been really successful but in the last few years England have been up there with the best, having three teams in the semi-finals or quarter-finals every year."
"This year it has changed, so it means that Italian teams are really strong again."
"It won't be easy and they have some really good players that we need to be careful of, but I think we are capable of going through."
With the second leg at the Emirates Stadium on March 6, Arteta knows an away goal at San Siro would dramatically increase his team's chances of going through.
"Scoring a goal in Italy could make a big difference," he said.
"So we need to be really concerned about what we do from the first minute, knowing there is a second leg at home and we will have our fans right behind us."
"We are playing a really good team. We need to go with a winning mentality and (know) that we can score goals over there."

Tevez ready for reconciliation

Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez is ready to mend his relationship with the club's fans, according to his agent.
The 28-year-old Argentine has not featured for the English Premier League table-toppers since refusing to warm up in a Champions League match at Bayern Munich in September.
Suspensions and fines followed, before Tevez returned to his home country without the club's permission.
But after a host of rumoured transfer moves in January failed to come to fruition, Tevez and the club appear to have made peace.
"He has a lot of repairs to do with the fans, he realises that," Joorabchian told Sky Sports News.
"He has said he is ready to apologise. He sincerely never felt he was doing something wrong at the time. He understands that his actions may not have implied that."
Joorabchian says Tevez will give his all to ensure City win their first league title since 1968.
"The main objective... if he can and he is permitted to get back on the pitch, he will do his best to help City win the title."
"He wants to come back, Manchester City have been very good with him as a club over the last couple of months. This has been a difficult situation for club and player, they have been very good in trying to resolve all the matters."
"The reality is that if Carlos can help City, and City want that help from Carlos to win the title between now until the end of the season, then that is what needs to happen and that is everyone's goal."
"He is saying that he will get himself ready, as the club have requested him to do. The club have said Carlos coming back can only be an asset to them."

Arsenal too predictable, says Bergkamp

Arsenal great Dennis Bergkamp has criticised the current Gunners side, labelling them one-dimensional and lacking in character.
The north London side have failed to win a trophy since Bergkamp's departure in 2006 and are battling to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.
The Dutchman stopped short of criticising former boss Arsene Wenger for the team's decline, but admitted the current crop at Emirates Stadium pales in comparison with the famed squad which won the club's last league title in 2004.
"I feel there are a lot of similar players there at the moment," Bergkamp told the Telegraph. "It needs to be more diverse."
"You need a few strong characters who can get the team going, in training as well as matches. You also need a few players who can make a difference in terms of scoring goals. I don't feel there are enough of them."
"You look at the midfield and compare it with ours. We had Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Ray Parlour – when it wasn't working for one of the big names, one of these could step up."
Arsenal have depended largely on captain Robin Van Persie for goals this season, and Bergkamp believes it is not healthy for any team to be so reliant on an individual.
"You can't only depend on one or two players," he added. "When they're having an off day, you need someone else."

Spain top FIFA rankings, Germany move second

World and European champions Spain remain atop the FIFA world rankings, while Germany have leapfrogged the Netherlands into second.
Fellow European heavyweights Portugal and Italy moved up one spot each to sixth and eighth respectively, while Denmark also climbed one place to push Argentina down to 11th.
The changes mean Uruguay (fourth) and Brazil (seventh) are the only non-European nations in the top 10. England (fifth) and Croatia (ninth) are the other teams in the top 10.
FIFA said the changes were due to the devaluation of matches from previous years, as none of the major European and South American countries in the top 10 played a match in the last month.
Elsewhere, Zambia's victorious Africa Cup of Nations campaign saw them soar 28 places to 43rd, making them the African continent's fourth highest ranked nation.
Ivory Coast, who lost Sunday's Afcon final in a penalty shoot-out, remain Africa's highest-ranked team at 15th.

Championship wrap: West Ham, Southampton draw

West Ham United held on to top spot in the Championship after a 1-1 draw with Southampton, while Cardiff City moved into third.
Sam Allardyce's West Ham played most of the top-of-the-table encounter with 10 men, but maintained their one-point advantage at the summit with the draw.
In a chaotic few minutes, Matt Taylor was sent off following a clash with Billy Sharp, which came after the hosts were awarded a penalty at Upton Park.
Captain Mark Noble stepped up and converted the 21st-minute spot-kick, but Southampton equalised in the second half when Dutchman Jos Hooiveld scored in the 75th minute.
Meanwhile, Cardiff City moved to within three points of second-placed Southampton with a 3-1 win at home over Peterborough United.
Midfielder Peter Whittingham scored directly from a corner, Rudy Gestede netted a header and teenager Haris Vuckic, on loan from Newcastle United, was also on the scoresheet as the Welsh side took a three-goal lead into the break.
Striker Paul Taylor struck a stoppage-time consolation for the visitors as promotion contenders Cardiff ended a three-game winless run.
Coventry City moved off the bottom as Gary McSheffrey's two penalties led them to a surprise 2-1 win over Leeds United.
Birmingham City extended their unbeaten league run to 10 matches after a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home to Hull City, while Gary Taylor-Fletcher's brace helped Blackpool move into fourth courtesy of a 3-1 win at lowly Doncaster Rovers.
Strugglers Bristol City salvaged a point as Brett Pitman's late double saw them secure a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, while Noel Hunt hit the winner in Reading's 1-0 victory at Derby County.
Middlesbrough held on with 10 men to secure their first league win of 2012 with a 2-1 victory at home against Nottingham Forest, while Craig Forsyth's 80th-minute goal saw Watford to a 3-2 win against Leicester City.
Elsewhere, Brighton and Hove Albion remain unbeaten this year after a 2-2 draw at home to Millwall, Michael Chopra scored the winner in Ipswich Town's 1-0 win at Portsmouth and Burnley overcame Barnsley 2-0.

Ancelotti keen to avenge Dijon defeat

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti is looking for revenge when his side travel to Dijon in the Coupe de France on Wednesday.
Ancelotti's team, then under the control of Antoine Kombouare, lost 3-2 to PSG in their last meeting in the French League Cup in October.
Although it is expected Ancelotti will rest several key players for the round-of-16 clash, the Italian said revenge is firmly on his mind.
"Today, the priority is the French Cup," Ancelotti said. "This Wednesday, we will play against Dijon. We want to win. Dijon beat PSG in the League Cup. We want to make up for this."
"The French Cup is important. The chance to play at the Stade de France is a big motivation."
PSG have a one-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 and will be hoping to extend that when they play second-placed Montpellier on Sunday.
"We have time to recover before playing Montpellier on Sunday. We have four days to recover so it's not a problem," Ancelotti said.
The coach said the battle for places in his starting XI is heating up, and claimed this is a positive for the side.
"I think the players must realise that there is a big competition among them," he said.
"We have 24 players. I have to make choices every game. I can understand the frustration of many players who don't play. I think it's normal. But the players must understand that competition is good for the team. It creates motivation."

Thompson in line for early return 15 February 2012

Melbourne Heart midfielder Matt Thompson says he is a '50-50' chance to return from injury to face Gold Coast United on Friday.
Thompson, 29, has been sidelined with a knee injury suffered in Heart's 3-1 loss to the Wellington Phoenix on January 29.
While initially expected to miss at least a month, Thompson could make a surprise return to the Heart line-up as they aim to end a run of eight matches without a win.
"It's progressing pretty good. I had a session with the fitness coach (Tom Reddin) on Saturday, the day the boys were playing, and surprisingly I pulled up pretty well," the Heart vice-captain said on Wednesday.
"We're still 50-50 for this week, but at worst I think I'll definitely be back the week after."
Without Thompson and captain Fred, as well as Australian under-23 representatives Mate Dugandzic, Aziz Behich and Jason Hoffman, Heart have slipped to sixth on the A-League table.
John van 't Schip's men suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of the Newcastle Jets on Saturday, and Thompson said he was disappointed his team were unable to build on the performance they produced in a 0-0 draw against Melbourne Victory a week earlier.
"I thought the Victory game was promising, we created some great chances and probably deserved to win there," he said.
"It's unfortunate that we probably didn't continue that form and we were pretty disappointing against Newcastle. I thought Newcastle played quite well and we just sort of never really got in the game."
With matches against the top three - Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix - to follow the Gold Coast outing, Friday's clash shapes as a must-win for the Heart.
Thompson said his team needed to get back to basics in order to end their winless run.
"When we went through that (undefeated) run, we were tough to beat. We were compact and making it hard for teams to create opportunities, but we seem to be slipping in that department at the moment," he said.
"I think if we get back to the basics, stick together and work as a unit then we'll get back to those winning ways."

Garde: We wanted more goals

Lyon boss Remi Garde hopes his team will not regret only netting once in their 1-0 Champions League win at home over APOEL on Tuesday.
A stubborn and defensive APOEL held firm for most of the round-of-16 first-leg clash at Stade de Gerland, but Alexandre Lacazette's deflected 58th-minute effort proved to be enough for the hosts.
Despite taking an advantage into the second leg - to be played in Nicosia on March 7 - Garde fears only scoring once at home could cost his side.
"The game went as we expected. We tried to dictate the pace and tried to ensure we didn't concede an away goal," Garde said.
"We would have liked to score more goals - hopefully we won't regret that in the second leg."
"They will have to come at us, which will give us chances on the counter-attack. We'll need to be strong mentally and make sure we are prepared."
After struggling to break down the visitors' defence, Lyon went ahead when Lacazette, given a surprise start, struck.
Garde believes his team still have work to do in the tie and said they lacked energy in the second half.
"We lacked freshness in the second half. We needed a bit of a boost to keep up the tempo of the first half," he said.
"My squad is at full steam, I can change things round from one match to another and I'll keep doing so."
"We're just at half-time of our tie - nothing is settled yet."
Cypriots APOEL rarely threatened in an attacking sense, and were without a shot on goal until the dying stages of the encounter.
APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic said he was happy with the result, but added it was far from his team's best performance.
"We are actually quite satisfied with the result. We have played better than we did tonight but often your performance is affected by your opponents, too," the Serbian said.
"They were strong, worked hard and did not allow us to play our normal game."

Lamela in line for Argentina debut

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has named an initial 18-man foreign-based squad for the February 29 friendly against Switzerland in Bern.
Sabella will later add domestic-based players to the squad, which includes a first call-up for Roma's Erik Lamela and 31-year-old Hugo Campagnaro of Napoli.
There is also a return for 31-year-old Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, who has 41 caps to his name.
Paris Saint-Germain attacker Javier Pastore is excluded as he is still recovering from injury, while Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez has been overlooked.
Martin Demichelis, Ever Banega, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Nicolas Burdisso have all missed out too.
Argentina will use the Switzerland friendly as preparation for their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, which restarts against Ecuador in June. Sabella had said in December he would use the match to try fringe options.
Argentina squad: Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (Sampdoria).
Defenders: Hugo Campagnaro (Napoli), Daniel Diaz (Getafe), Federico Fernandez (Napoli), Ezequiel Garay (Benfica), Luciano Monzon (Nice), Marcos Rojo (Spartak Moscow), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City).
Midfielders: Angel di Maria (Real Madrid), Fernando Gago (Roma), Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Erik Lamela (Roma), Jose Ernesto Sosa (Metalist Kharkiv), Maxi Rodriguez (Liverpool).
Strikers: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa).

Copa Libertadores wrap: Defensor open with win, Boca start slowly

Defensor Sporting have claimed their first win of the 2012 Copa Libertadores with a 2-0 triumph over Deportivo Quito on Tuesday.
Defensor went ahead in the 23rd minute thanks to a penalty from Brahian Aleman before Maximiliano Callorda wrapped up the result with a goal in the 79th minute.
The Uruguayan club lost to Velez Sarsfield in their Copa Libertadores opener on February 8, but are now equal with Sarsfield on three points in Group Seven, although Sarsfield has a game in hand.
In Group Eight, Atletico Nacional have beaten Universidad de Chile 2-0.
The club from Medellin in Columbia took the lead after 28 minutes when defender Juan Valencia scored, but they had to wait until nine minutes from full time when Dorlan Pabon hit the back of the net.
While in Group Four, Boca Juniors have started slowly in their first appearance in the South American continental competition in three years.
The Argentine giants could only manage a 0-0 draw away to Copa Libertadores-debutants Zamora.

Guardiola thrilled with away win

A satisfied Pep Guardiola hailed his Barcelona team after their 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday.
An Alexis Sanchez brace and a goal from Lionel Messi helped the European champions to the round-of-16 first-leg win at BayArena.
Guardiola, whose team have slipped 10 points adrift of Real Madrid in La Liga, said he was happy with his side's performance in Germany.
"In the art of competing, my team showed they are doing well. This is the Champions League and we came to Germany to face a team that practically eliminated Valencia, and we all know about (the quality of) Valencia," Guardiola said.
"We are very satisfied with what we have done here tonight. We are a little bit closer to getting into the draw for the quarter-finals."
Michal Kadlec briefly levelled proceedings in the second half, but Sanchez restored his team's advantage before Messi struck late on.
Guardiola praised Sanchez and Messi, and said the latter was dealing well with the goalscoring expectations he carries.
"As a player I hardly ever scored so I can't speak from experience, but I imagine goalscorers need to score," he said.
"Messi has no problems dealing with these things though. He scored a really wonderful goal and was involved in many moves. He's continuing to show his strength which for us is vital."
"Alexis is putting in a lot of work and is scoring a lot. He opens up the pitch for us and his movement is great. I'm very happy for him. He's a very humble guy."
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt refused to concede the tie was over despite heading to the Camp Nou with a 3-1 deficit.
The hosts were on the back foot for the majority of the first half, before working their way into the contest after the interval.
"During the break I asked my players to take the initiative and participate in the match. In the second half, we caused Barcelona problems," Dutt said.
"For 15 minutes, we were the better team and played some really good football. For the match at the Camp Nou, normally we wouldn't have a chance but you never know."
"A few years ago I watched Barcelona beat Basel (5-0) in Switzerland, but they drew 1-1 in the second game in Spain, so anything is possible."

Ba relishing success in England

Newcastle United striker Demba Ba has spoken of his pleasure at playing in the English Premier League following early set-backs in France.
Ba appears to be enjoying life in the northeast of England and is the Premier League's third leading goal-scorer with 16 strikes so far this season.
Things were not always so simple for the striker, who said he struggled to break into professional football as a teenager in France.
"At 16 years, I tried to get into a training centre in France to learn from great coaches. Unfortunately, it did not happen for me," Ba told RMC Sport.
"They did not really believe in me in France. I started in CFA (Championnat de France amateur) in Rouen before leaving for Belgium."
Ba's career took him to Excelsior Mouscron in Belgium, before a switch to Hoffenheim in Germany.
He joined West Ham United in January 2011, impressing despite the team being demoted from the top flight.
A relegation-release clause in his West Ham contract allowed Ba to join Newcastle United in June.
The club have prospered with the help of the Senegal international and occupy sixth position in the Premier League, one point away from the Champions League qualification zone.
Ba was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window, but reaffirmed his loyalty to Newcastle.
"My future? I am already in the best league in the world with all the big teams there is," he said.
"I'm very focussed on this end of season, we want to achieve something and I would like to see it happen."

Robinho, Kaka head Brazil exclusions

Brazil coach Mano Menezes has omitted several European-based stars from his squad for this month's friendly with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Serie A quartet Maicon, Lucio, Robinho and Alexandre Pato have all been overlooked for selection, as have Real Madrid's Kaka and Manchester United duo Rafael and Fabio.
Benfica centre back Luisao and Chelsea's David Luiz have retained their places on the 23-man list.
They will be joined in defence by Vasco da Gama's exciting 23-year-old centre back Dede.
Given the list of absentees, the selection of both Elias of Sporting Lisbon and Flamengo's Ronaldinho is somewhat surprising.
Ronaldinho has struggled for fitness and form during his time at Flamengo, but Menezes clearly feels the former Barcelona star still has something to offer.
Valencia's Jonas has held onto his place in the squad having impressed in Brazil's last two friendly fixtures against Gabon and Egypt.
Brazil face Bosnia in St Gallen on Frebruary 28.
Brazil squad:
Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Diego Alves (Valencia), Rafael (Santos)
Defenders: Marcelo (Real Madrid), Daniel Alves, Adriano (both Barcelona), Alex Sandro (Porto), Thiago Silva (AC Milan), David Luiz (Chelsea), Luisao (Benfica), Dede (Vasco da Gama)
Midfielders: Danilo (Porto), Elias (Sporting), Fernandinho (Shakhtar Donetsk), Hernanes (Lazio), Sandro (Tottenham Hotspur), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos), Lucas (Sao Paulo), Ronaldinho (Flamengo)
Forwards: Neymar (Santos), Leandro Damiao (Internacional), Jonas (Valencia), Hulk (Porto)

Maradona refuses to give in on demands

Al Wasl coach Diego Maradona has continued to vent his frustration at the apparent lack of transfer funds available at the Dubai outfit.
In response to last week's outbursts, where he threatened to leave unless he was allowed more money to spend, Maradona refused to apologise and was adamant he needed increased funds to bring success to his team.
"I want to be able to compete, I want to be able to fight for the top spots, and this is basically my right and I still stick by my opinion," he told reporters.
"We talked about some of the challenges facing Al Wasl team, we're trying to find solutions to benefit the team."
It was reported Maradona held a meeting with Al Wasl chairman Marwan Bin Bayat on Sunday, and the Argentine legend was confident of leading the club to the summit of the UAE Pro League in the future.
"I support Mr Marwan and I know that the Board of Directors have certain ambitions and we want to help him achieve these objectives," he said.
"I have 34, 35 years of experience in football and there isn't a problem that I haven't faced and I have a lot to bring to Al Wasl as far as experience is concerned and that's what was discussed and there was a mutual agreement of the objectives set for next season."
Al Wasl are currently fifth in the UAE Pro League, nine points behind leaders Al Ain.

Giggs calls for end to race row

Ryan Giggs says Manchester United and Liverpool must move forward from the Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez affair.
On Saturday, Reds striker Suarez refused to shake hands with Evra when the two came face-to-face for the first time since the Uruguayan was handed an eight-match ban for racially abusing the defender.
United went onto win the English Premier League match 2-1, with Suarez getting one back for Liverpool late on, but fury sparked once more after an altercation inside the tunnel at full-time in which the sides clashed.
Following the match, Liverpool and Suarez issued an apology for the handshake snub, with the striker admitting his behaviour was wrong and Giggs hopes that the reaction to the game can help move the matter on.
"I think everyone involved wanted to move forward and we had hoped that would happen on Saturday," he said.
"It obviously didn't, but then 24 hours later, with the statements issued by Liverpool on Sunday, it looks like it might be the end of it."
"That's what both clubs need and what football in general needs. The clubs need to move on. The rivalry will always be there, but let's have it as healthy rivalry and nothing else."
"The fans were chanting about me winning more titles than Steven Gerrard on Saturday, but that's what you get between fans and it's what you want - you want good, healthy banter between fans."
The idea of a pre-match handshake is now in the balance but 38-year-old Giggs believes even if the tradition is scrapped, players will still proceed with the action at some point.
"It's only this season where it (handshake) has been a problem," he said.
"If you ask most players, they'd take it or leave it. It's just part of the build-up. It's what you do and you are used to doing it."
"But if they take it away, so what? Players would still shake hands after the game."
Giggs had been happy to shake Suarez's hand even after the issue with Evra but the legendary midfielder concedes he was not sure what had happened.
"I knew something had gone on because there was a bit of a kerfuffle, but I didn't know what," he said.
"It wasn't until afterwards, when you saw it on the television, that you realised what had happened."

Champions League preview: Zenit St. Petersburg v Benfica

Benfica's 11-match winning streak in all competitions will come under threat when they travel to Russia to meet Zenit St. Petersburg.
The first leg of the round-of-16 Champions League tie will see the leaders of both the Portuguese and Russian top flights collide on Wednesday.
Jorge Jesus' Benfica are five points clear of Porto atop Liga Sagres after a superb run of form.
The free-scoring side have hit the back of the net in their last 38 competitive fixtures; the last time they failed to score was in a 1-0 Europa League loss in the second leg of their semi-final against Sporting Braga.
The form of Oscar Cardozo has been crucial, with the Paraguayan having bagged 20 goals for the club in all competitions this season, including 11 in his last 10 appearances.
Spanish forward Rodrigo has 13 goals this season, and with five in his last four matches he also enters the match in red-hot form.
Benfica's terrific record in the Champions League this season will give them further confidence, with the Portuguese outfit one of just three sides to go through the group stages undefeated.
Another battle that Benfica face is the freezing weather in Russia, which is sure to play into the hands of the first-leg hosts.
Forecasts suggest the temperature will be below minus 10 degrees, which will surely make life difficult for the visitors.
Zenit have not been in especially good form this season in Europe and they have not played a competitive match since snaring a point in a goalless stalemate at Porto on December 6.
Prolific striker Alexander Kerzhakov will be Zenit's main threat having netted 16 goals from 22 league appearances this season.
Portuguese playmaker Danny will miss out for Zenit due to a knee injury, as will Vyacheslav Malafeev (calf) and Domenico Criscito (food poisoning).
Benfica are likely to be without Javi Garcia (knock) but Emerson and Luisao (thigh) should feature.

Milan´s Seedorf ready for Arsenal testAC Milan veteran Clarence Seedorf is wary of the threat posed by Arsenal in Wednesday's Champions League round-of-16 first leg. Serie A champions Milan finished second in Champions League Group H, behind holders Barcelona. In this week's first knockout stage they take on English Premier League side Arsenal, who topped Group F ahead of Marseille, at San Siro. Arsenal reached the final of the Champions League in 2006, and Seedorf has a healthy respect for Wenger's European regulars. "Every year, Arsenal take part in the Champions League to win it," Seedorf told Sky Sports. "They have the right combination of young and experienced players. They are one of the sides to beat." In 2003, Seedorf became the first player to win the Champions League with three different clubs (Ajax, Real Madrid and Milan), before lifting the trophy a fourth time in 2007. The 35-year-old compared the emotion of winning the Champions League to that of becoming a father. "Winning the Champions League is a joy than can be compared to the birth of a child," Seedorf said. "Every player dreams of winning it."

Henry set for Arsenal goodbye

hierry Henry wants to sign off on a high when his Arsenal loan spells ends with trip to face AC Milan in the Champions League.
Henry, 34, re-joined the north London club last month as part of temporary switch from New York Red Bulls during the Major League Soccer off-season.
He heads back to the US this week, but not before a first-leg clash with Serie A title holders Milan in the Champions League round of 16.
Henry scored the winning goal for Arsenal in their 2-1 English Premier League victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
When asked about the prospect of scoring one last time for Arsenal in Wednesday's match at San Siro, Henry told The Independent: "I have not thought about it. I just want to help Arsenal on the night."
"I am an Arsenal player for one more game. Milan is Milan. It is another type of game and it is never easy to win away in the Champions League."
Henry said the pleasure of such an unexpected opportunity to extend his Arsenal career was yet to sink in.
"I will look back on it afterwards and see what happened," he said.
"It has all been kind of unreal."
Team-mate Aaron Ramsey praised the influence of the former France international, before saying Arsenal should aim to take the initiative in Milan.
"It's been a fantastic period for (Henry), coming back to the club that he supports, and (he) has done so much for. It's a great story for him so far," Ramsey said.
"If we can go (to Milan) and get a few goals and then come back to the Emirates then that's going to be a fantastic result for us. Hopefully, we can get a couple of goals and keep them out as well.

Porto chief tips Villas-Boas for Inter

Porto president Pinto da Costa believes Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas will join Inter Milan if he leaves the English Premier League club.
Villas-Boas, 34, took over at Chelsea in June after guiding Porto to an impressive treble of the Liga Sagres, Portuguese Cup and Europa League in 2010/11.
He has struggled to reproduce such success during his first season at Stamford Bridge - Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League standings, 17 points back from leaders Manchester City.
Serie A club Inter were reportedly unable to secure Villas-Boas' services because of a 15 million-euro release clause in his Porto contract.
But if Chelsea were to dismiss him, Da Costa thinks the San Siro would be an ideal destination for his former employee.
"If he were to leave Chelsea, I am sure he will become the next coach at Inter," Da Costa told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"He has the right personality to coach the Nerazzurri."
"In the past, I said the same thing about (Jose) Mourinho. However, in my opinion Villas-Boas made a mistake to leave Porto so soon."
"He thought that this was a unique opportunity, but he would surely get other offers like that."
Da Costa, 74, believes Villas-Boas needs time to put together a team capable of mounting a Premier League title challenge.
"I think that Villas-Boas is doing well at Chelsea," he said.
"He only needs time to fine-tune the squad, but this is impossible when there are players exchanging text messages with Mourinho."
"The only thing that could make him leave Chelsea will be the team's failure to qualify for the Champions League."
Inter appointed Gian Piero Gasperini as coach at the start of the 2011/12 season.
After failing to record a victory in five matches, he was sacked in September and replaced by Claudio Ranieri.

Ravanelli tells Juve to focus

Fabrizio Ravanelli believes his old club Juventus face a test of mental strength if they are to regain their lead in Serie A.
Juventus' league fixture against Bologna was postponed last weekend, and they were subsequently displaced from top spot by AC Milan, who earned a dramatic 2-1 victory over Udinese.
Juve remain undefeated in Serie A this season, and sit two points back from the defending champions.
They have played two matches fewer than Milan, but former Italy international Ravanelli knows better than to consider those games as points in the bag.
"Points and games to recover, do not count. Mentally you may think you have six points, but they count only the real ones," he told La Stampa.
The two-time Scudetto winner believes the pressure is on Juve, who can move above Milan if they win a re-arranged fixture against Parma this Wednesday.
"Well, now it is Juve who are chasing," he said.
"For this they will face the recoveries with a remarkable psychological weight."
Juventus could move four points clear at the top should they win both their games in hand.

Baldini: No Serie A return for Capello

Former England general manager Franco Baldini does not think Fabio Capello will return to Italian coaching in the near future.
Capello, 65, is without a job after stepping down as coach of England last week following the Football Association's unilateral decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.
A move to Inter Milan has been mooted as a possibility, with Claudio Ranieri under considerable pressure at San Siro, but Baldini expects Capello to continue working outside his native country.
"I do not believe that a return to Italy is in his plans, I would be very surprised if that happened," Baldini told Mediaset.
Russian Premier League outfit Anzhi Makhachkala are believed to be in pole position to secure Capello's services after Yuri Krasnozhan left the club on Monday.
Meanwhile, Roma sporting director Baldini rued his team's display in their 1-0 Serie A defeat at Siena on Monday.
"We saw one side who wanted the victory and one who did not want it that much," he said.
"We did not play the game we usually play, I think it was one of our worst performances this season."
"Roma missed more than the result tonight. The coach and the players must question themselves."

Moratti powerless on Eto´o loss

nter Milan president Massimo Moratti says the club were unable to retain the services of key men Samuel Eto'o and Thiago Motta.Cameroon striker Eto'o signed for Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala last August in a deal reportedly worth 28 million euros, while Motta made the switch to Paris Saint-Germain last month.
Inter's attempts at reinforcing their squad have been the subject of much scrutiny, with the club sitting a distant fifth place on the Serie A table.
While the loss of Eto'o appears to have damaged Inter's prospects, but Moratti stressed the club was helpless in preventing the duo from leaving.
"I think I am an Inter fan and if some players left, it is because the conditions to keep them were no longer there," Moratti told Corriere della Sera.
"Nothing was done accidentally or superficially, we always considered the needs of that particular moment."
Moratti conceded his side may have made some poor recruitment moves, and acknowledged the fans' unhappiness at their relative lack of success in the past two seasons.
"It is possible that we have made some wrong decisions," Moratti said.
"But I do not think we made many errors, or even serious ones."
"The problem is that we had become too well-accustomed; in the last years we found players who were able to quickly enter the mechanism of the team."
"Football is not maths and strategies, as a renewal which seemed correct sometimes do not deliver the results that you wanted."

Mazzarri savours Chelsea challenge

Walter Mazzarri hopes his squad can handle the rigours of European football as they foray into the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Italian outfit face Premier League heavyweight Chelsea in their round-of-16 tie next week.
Mazzarri is proud of the way his players have performed under the duress of domestic and continental competition, even if the challenge took some time to get used to.
"We are playing lots of games in a short space of time and we're not used to it, therefore we could have a few problems. I've asked the guys to be extremely careful and they have done so," Mazzarri said.
"I'm starting to get the days of the week confused as we've had very few chances to get together as a squad. Now we're starting to get used to this situation and this is our greatest improvement."
Mazzarri presided over his side's 2-0 defeat of Chievo in the Serie A on Monday and believes they are having a great year, particularly given injuries that have affected the team.
"I believe we're having a great year considering all the matches we're playing. This isn't a lucky year in terms of referees' decisions and the number of injured players."
"In other matches we played better, created more chances, but didn't managed to score a goal, whereas (against Chievo) we had luck on our side."
"We have seen the results of the hard work we've put in. At the end we'll see the results, but what we have done up to now already represents an important success."
Napoli face Fiorentina away in Serie A action on Friday before their home leg with Chelsea at the San Paolo on Tuesday.
